I have been fortunate enough to read all of Robert’s books in the “Rob and Tex” series, helping him work on one or two of them, and this is certainly one of the better ones. Without the gung-ho action of Freedom’s Light, or the profound wartime trauma of Bullets and Bandages, Butterfly Lake is perhaps a more understated and subtle piece of work, and this certainly suits it. Set in the beauty and tranquillity of the Pennsylvania mountains, which Rob clearly loves, there is more an air of cerebral drama about this instalment, as Tex now becomes the principle protagonist, when his young daughter is kidnapped by two dangerous criminals, one of whom certainly means to do her harm. Tex and his friend Rob are once again called into action, turning to the skills they honed during their Vietnam tours of duty, and dusting off their rifles. There is a real sense of First Blood or Deadly Pursuit about this book.
Well written by Robert, who seems to be improving
with every new publication. He is prolific,
and I know very well how hard he works to make his books the best they can possibly.
For that, as a fellow author, I admire
and somewhat envy Rob. Butterfly Lake
is a good, inoffensive yet gripping, quality thriller, and it will keep you engrossed
for the entirety of its relatively short word count; you could very easily read
this book in one day or evening, and a very entertaining evening it will be,
too. Whether it is action you like,
drama, decent-natured people rallying to stop really bad guys, or you just want
to spend a few hours imagining the wonder of the North American countryside, I’m
certain you can find something in Butterfly Lake which you’ll enjoy, and
I would therefore not see any reason not to recommend it to pretty much anybody. A good book, and I enjoyed reading it a great
deal.
