Wow! The 5-star books just keep on coming!
This is a great book for kids and adults alike. This fun horror-adventure was the perfect use
of my time, and just the right amount of it, too; I couldn’t put it down, and
read the whole thing in one sitting. You
can tell immediately an author who has fun with his work, and Chad clearly does
that. Entertaining and creative, with
some genuinely quite scary moments, this is a book I would recommend very
highly to middle-school kids and young-at-heart adults.
Reminiscent of the Spielberg-esque kids-on-bikes movies of Chad’s youth – or perhaps the cartoon segments in “Creepshow” – there are some nostalgic and affectionate nods to the horror genre of the time (the main character is called “Jesse” and moves to Elm Street; he befriends a comic-store owner, who shoots vampires with garlic and holy water from a squirt-gun). This book crosses genres between horror and the detective fantasy books of the 80s, and I for one, being of a similar age, loved every minute of it. It is inoffensive and genuinely gripping, whilst the climactic showdown is entertaining and action-packed, with even a few vicious surprises, not to mention some real laughs. There was a part of me that wished there were illustrations I could look at with it, but perhaps its best audience is a little old for that, and I was possibly regressing a touch too far. Chad’s language is the perfect choice for this book: easily absorbed, well delivered, with a great pace and suitably chilling where necessary.
I had a great time reading this wonderful book, and I can’t
wait to read Chad’s next instalments, of which I hope there will be many more,
in a – fingers crossed – hugely successful series.
